Types of Branches in Civil Engineering to Choose From

CivilEngineering is about designing, implementation of plans and maintenance. It covers the structures and facilities, like large scale monuments, arenas, transportation routes, government buildings and various structures. Engineers will be able to either work for private companies or for the government hired by the government officials. In private sector, some civil engineers handle projects for individual firms.

Types of Branches in Civil Engineering

Civil engineering has different types of branches.  It is up to the civil engineers to choose a particular
branch in engineering colleges India and specialize in it.

·         Construction – This branch covers planning, maintenance and construction of structures. It is execution and planning of designing from environmental, development, transportation and structural engineers.  The engineers have to ensure designing the plans and implement according to accurate specifications. They oversee the field work in their whole project.

·         Structural Engineering – This branch covers design and analysis of structures. Structural engineer is responsible to design and analyze a structure that can safely resist or withstand forces, loads and stresses. The design should meet the specifications of the project by considering all safety rules. Structure should be able to hold massive loads and withstand climate changes and natural disasters.

·         Tunnel Engineering – It is the responsibility of tunnel engineers to plan, design, construct and maintain safety of tunnels. They should adhere to the specifications while constructing tunnels for waterways, roadways and trains.

·         Earthquake Engineering – They should study the R.C.C. framed or earthquake resistant buildings along with seismic forces. In places which receive high intensity of seismic activities, they should design and make buildings according to specifications so that they can withstand scenarios of earthquake.

·         Geotechnical Engineering – The geotechnical engineers are assigned to study foundations, soil and bearing capacities. They study reactions of materials found on earth surface and their effect on construction of structure. They can also determine pre-existing buildings which are indicating problems and their signs with the materials near or under the structure.

·         Transportation – Those who choose this branch from top engineering universities in India will have to plan, construct and manage transportation modes. They will have to design and execute infrastructures related to transportation for delivering comfortable, safe, convenient, eco-friendly, and economical means of transport.   Related to this branch, six divisions are there, like air transportation, highway, aerospace, waterway, ocean, coastal and urban transportation.

·         Water Resource Engineering – Water Resource Engineers are responsible for construction and design of hydraulic structures, like canals, dams and water distribution system. They are responsible for structure’s design along with safety precautions and implementation.

·         Surveying – This branch manages leveling and surveying of land with several mapping instruments. It involves locating and measuring lines of property, laying out bridges, buildings, channels, pipelines and highways for construction purpose.
